Strip HTML tags from text

Paste HTML source or text copied from a page and get the words without the tags. Paragraphs, headings and list items become lines, table cells become tab-separated, and entities become real characters.

Scripts, styles and comments are dropped whole. Block elements such as paragraphs, headings and list items end with a line break, table cells with a tab, and <br> becomes a line break, so the text keeps its shape. Named and numeric entities are decoded: &amp; becomes &, &nbsp; becomes a space, &#8212; becomes an em dash. Invisible characters are removed in the same pass; turn on the other switches to straighten quotes or replace dashes as well.

How to strip HTML tags from text

  1. Paste the HTML. A whole page source, an email body or a fragment.
  2. Strip the tags. One click removes them, decodes the entities and copies the text.
  3. Tidy further. The line tools can collapse blank lines or join broken paragraphs afterwards.

Questions people ask

Does the HTML have to be valid?

No. Tags are matched by pattern, so broken or partial markup works. A stray < followed by a space, as in "a < b", is left alone.

Are links kept?

The link text is kept and the address inside the tag goes with the tag. Use the extract URLs tool on the original HTML to get a list of the addresses.
