Extract text from an image
Drop a screenshot, a photo of a page or a scanned document and get editable text. The recognition engine downloads once and runs on your device, so the image never leaves it.
How to extract text from an image
- Drop the image. PNG, JPG, WebP or a photo from your phone. Several at once is fine.
- Choose the language. English is preselected; pick another for the best accuracy. The language pack downloads once and is cached.
- Copy the text. Edit it in place, copy it, or download it as a text file.

Questions people ask
Are my images uploaded?
No. The recognition engine, Tesseract compiled to WebAssembly, and its language pack are downloaded to your browser the first time. After that the image is read on your device and never sent anywhere.
How accurate is it?
Very good on screenshots and clean scans; decent on phone photos of printed pages when the text is sharp and level. Handwriting is not supported.
Which languages are supported?
English, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Each language pack is a few megabytes.
What can I do to improve results?
Crop to the text, make sure it is in focus and not rotated, and use a language that matches. The image tools on myownpic.com can crop and rotate first.
