Convert markdown to plain text
Strip the symbols and keep the words. Headings, bold, italic, lists, links, images, tables and code fences all become readable plain text.
Markdown is great for writing and terrible for pasting into places that do not render it. This page removes the syntax while keeping the content: link text stays and the URL goes, image alt text stays, bullets become • marks (or disappear, your choice) with their indentation kept, numbering is kept, tables become tab-separated rows, and horizontal rules disappear. Code keeps every character, including underscores and asterisks that are part of the code.
How to convert markdown to plain text
- Paste the markdown. From a README, a chat assistant or a note-taking app.
- Check what is removed. The count of markdown symbols found appears above the switches. Pick how bullets and tables should look.
- Copy plain text. Paste it into email, a form or a document. Or use "Copy with formatting" to get real headings and lists instead.

Questions people ask
Do links keep their URLs?
The link text is kept and the URL is dropped, which is what you want in a document. Bare URLs in the text are kept exactly as they are. Use the extract tool if you need the list of URLs.
What happens to code blocks?
The fence markers are removed and the code inside is kept as plain text, indentation intact. Underscores and asterisks inside code are never treated as formatting.
Are tables converted?
Yes. Each row becomes a line with the cells separated by tabs, so it pastes into Google Sheets or Excel as a proper table, and the dashed separator row is removed. Choose "Keep the pipes" for a plain-text look instead.
