Send an empty message on Discord

Discord refuses a message made of spaces, but not one made of a zero width space. Copy it, paste it into the chat box and press Enter.

Discord trims ordinary whitespace and then refuses to send an empty message. The zero width space (U+200B) is not whitespace to Discord, so a message containing only that character goes through and shows as a blank line. The same trick works for display names and server nicknames, though the newer lowercase usernames only allow letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. Use the tester below to confirm the character survived the copy.

How to send an empty message on Discord

  1. Copy the character. The big button copies the blank character preset for Discord.
  2. Paste it. Into the name field or the message box.
  3. Check it. Paste into the tester below and it counts the invisible characters it finds.

Questions people ask

Can I make my Discord display name invisible?

Display names and server nicknames accept the zero width space and the Hangul filler. Usernames do not.

The message was not sent

Some keyboards strip the character when pasting. Try the Hangul filler or the braille blank from the list, which count as visible letters.
