Count characters as you type

Live character counts with and without spaces, plus the limits for every major platform so you can see what still fits.

Runs on your device No account No limits Free, no ads

Character limits are everywhere: 280 on X, 150 in an Instagram bio, 160 in an SMS or a meta description, 2,200 in an Instagram caption. The counter shows all of them at once with how many characters you have left, and counts the way each platform does: X weighs links as 23 and emoji as 2, SMS drops to 70 per message once it needs Unicode, Bluesky counts graphemes.

Questions people ask

Do line breaks count as characters?

Yes, each line break is one character on most platforms.

Why does an emoji count as two?

Many emoji are made of several code points, for example a flag is two regional indicators and a skin-toned hand is two or more. Most platforms count the code points; X counts every emoji as two and Bluesky counts each as one, and the table follows each of those rules.
